Stanford Statement of Purpose: How to Make a Lasting Impression

Is the Stanford University Statement of Purpose Really That Important?

Stanford is acknowledged as the most selective university in the US. It will accept less than 5% of those applying. It is seen as one of the most prestigious universities in the world and having a degree from there can do wonders for your chances of success. It is ranked number 3 in the world by the Times Higher Education world rankings. It is also an excellent place to attend if you are from outside the US with 22% of students being from overseas. A Berkeley statement of purpose, for instance, is going to be very different to the one that you write for Stanford.

Your Stanford statement of purpose needs to be of the highest quality as must the rest of your application. Getting selected means that you must stand out from the huge number of applicants and make your application truly memorable. Your name must be on the tip of the admissions committee’s tongue if you want any chance of a place. To achieve this your essays must be carefully tailored to the application.

Writing a Stanford admissions essay that is going to get you noticed however is not going to be simple in any way. Even if you have the best grades you are competing against many others who will be equally as well qualified and many will take a huge amount of care over their application. Our specialized SoP writing services, however, are able to provide you with the edge that you will need to make you stand out.

How Can You Apply to Stanford?

Applications to the University of Stanford are made using either the common or the coalition application process. It’s up to you which you choose as each will ask for very similar information. The following information will be commonly asked for:

  • A $90 fee for your application
  • School transcripts midyear
  • School report and the counselor letter of recommendation
  • Scores for ACT with writing or the SAT with essay
  • Letters of recommendation written by 2 teachers
  • One admission essay was chosen from the list of available prompts
  • Answers to the 3 Stanford admission essay questions in the supplement

What to Study at Stanford?

Your Stanford SoP or personal statement is going to be a vital part of your application and it should clearly show why you have a passion for your specific subject area. Most students will already have an idea as to the subjects that they wish to follow when they apply to the university. The following are some of the most popular subject areas within the university that a candidate would apply to:

  • Computer science: being so close to Silicon Valley probably heavily influences this selection and as such it can do wonders for your career in the area. Around 90% of students at the university will take some form of computer-based course prior to graduation.
  • Engineering: there are many different disciplines within this area but it is an area in which the university excels. Some quarter of undergraduates and more than half of graduate students are engineering majors. Harvard and Yale are at around a fifth of this.
  • Business: according to the Financial Times the Stanford Graduate School for Business is ranked second in the world. So if the business is your thing this is the place to study it.

Writing Your Stanford Statement of Purpose

You will be asked to write more than one essay when you apply to Stanford. If you apply through the Coalition essay then you will be expected to write one essay from a choice of 5 essays. Your essay should be no more than 550 words in length. Through the Common Application, you will be able to submit one essay from a choice of 7 prompts. The essay needs to be between 250 and 650 words in length.

In addition to the statement of purpose Stanford called for by the main application, you will also be asked to supply a further three essays within the Stanford supplement for application to the university. These three Stanford admission essay questions are:

  • The Stanford community is deeply curious and driven to learn in and out of the classroom. Reflect on an idea or experience that makes you genuinely excited about learning.
  • Virtually all of Stanford’s undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to the future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.
  • Tell us about something that is meaningful to you, and why?

These essays are only short, you need to write between 100 words and 250 words maximum. This is not a lot of space at all so you will need to be very selective with what you will write if you are going to make an impact. The following tips will help you with your writing for your Stanford SoP and short essays:

  • Don’t repeat anything that you have already written elsewhere within your application. Each prompt should be answered in a unique manner and different from the others.
  • Don’t be boring: no matter what you write to try to make it upbeat and interesting so that you keep the attention of the reader. Make your opening line really get their attention and maintain that interest by telling an engaging yet short story.
  • Look at a Stanford statement of purpose sample so that you can see how others have gone about their essay writing. Do not however just copy what you find.
  • Check out the essay writing advice that the university itself provides for you as well as other sources. Why guess what they want when often they tell you.
  • Don’t spend all of your time talking about what happened or what you did. This is not what they want to know. They want to know the following:
  • Why you do something, why is it important to you?
  • What is meaningful about what you do?
  • How have you been changed? What improvements have you made in your life?
  • What does it say about your values and personality?
  • Make sure your essay is about you. They want to learn who you are and not learn about your favorite teacher or a charity that you participate in.
