Your application needs to clearly show your suitability for the program and should be written in your own words about you. It needs to be easy to understand and capable of impressing the reader without confusing them. Too many students, however, think that writing a good statement of purpose means trying to use unusual words to impress the committee or writing in a complex manner to show off their intelligence.
Writing statement of purpose pages that are easy to understand is far more effective than trying to impress with language that you simply would never use in real life. It is also less likely to confuse the reader or lead to misunderstandings about what you meant to say.

If you use highly unusual words and structure you writing in a flowery manner it will be clear to the reader that this is not the way you would not normally write. - Never replace words with unusual words selected from the thesaurus that most will never have encountered. There is nothing clever about finding and using a 15 syllable word that has an unusual meaning that most simply will not understand. The committee is not going to look the word up and often you will use it incorrectly.
- If you do swap a word for a synonym ensure that you select one that all understand and that is used correctly in the context of your writing.
- Do not use acronyms, not everyone will understand what they mean or they may mean something different for others.
- Never use text speak or abbreviations. They will expect normal formal English from your writing and nothing less.
- Do not try to write something in a flowery manner. Your writing should be clear, concise, and straight to the point.
- Never copy and try to change a few words for synonyms: the software used is clever enough to be able to identify if you have plagiarized and simply changed a few words around.
